Great Mexican food in a fun atmosphere! I had a burrito, chips/salsa, and a blended margarita. Our host & server were both friendly & attentive, even though the place was packed-mid-week! Please try the flour tortillas! Yum! The corn chips were good, too (served warm), but I loved the flour.

Went here one night with a large group of women, we called ahead, made our reservation and apparently there was a mix up with our reservation and we ended up being told we would have to wait for 2 hours to be seated. We were all at the 2 small table areas by the door/bar area no one was asked if they wanted anything to drink. If you wanted something you had to go to the bar and even then people were having a hard time getting drinks. We all ended up leaving and going to dinner at another place. The next day my husband and I went here for lunch and the food was pretty good, we got much better service and the food was out quickly. I don't see what the big deal is about the flour chips, they weren't very sturdy almost as if they weren't cooked long enough.

Yikes. I so wanted to like this place but I didn't. The queso was marginal at best. Just bland cheese flavor with little spice and no complexity. The homemade flour chips were chewy/soggy. The rice was unique and had promise but in the end was just ok. Same for the enchilada - I had high hopes but they were dashed. I'm not a Mexican food snob but I've had way better. Sorry Palace - it just wasn't good.

Meh. It was so-so. We had to wait for a table--NOT a big deal at all, particularly because we were there right at dinner time on Saturday night. But the host/manager guy was super weird. He sat a woman before us who was still waiting for her two dining-mates, and she even asked to wait until her friends arrived--but he insisted that she sit. Ok?? We could've been seated and ordered and been half-way through eating before her friends finally arrived. This same guy kept asking what our names were (to see where we were on the waiting list) and then would say something odd about the customers at the tables who were "...just sitting there..." so that's why he couldn't give us a table yet. UM, feel free to leave out inappropriate, awkward comments next time. He was friendly enough to us, just awkward and not professional whatsoever. When we did finally sit down, our server was GREAT. She was swamped with tables but was very friendly, attentive, and helpful. We had chili con queso with chips to start, which was just ok. It tasted just like velveeta with old chilis in it....and not velveeta in a good way. :/ My classic bean burrito was fairly legit--but the ingredients used, seemed not fresh all around. I wouldn't recommend this place, really, unless you like to drink--their bar seemed busy.

The place was nice. Our server wasn't pleasant but we thought it was her and not a culture issue because all the other staff was great. I ordered the steak and shrimp fajitas. The shrimp weren't clean! Nasty. I paid too much to get dirty shrimp. Other than that the food was great. 3.5 stars from us.

Great outdoor dining experience. We had four adults and we tried 3 different personal size nacho entrees. Each was delicious. We had nacho supreme, blue and black and the bacon ranch. Bacon ranch was probably our favorite of the three but all 3 flavors were delicious. Atmosphere was fun. Margaritas were delicious (the margaritas glasses are very cute!). Our waitress Elaine was very helpful and attentive. We would definitely go back. Went back for lunch. Same great food and service. Jacob was our waiter. He was excellent. We will be back our next trip to this area

We hopped on yelp to help us find a place to eat. This place sounded unique and good. Definitely unique, not often do you walk in and see a suit of armor wearing a coconut bra. We got the appetizer sampler with mixed chips. We are confident the flour chips were made on the spot and think the Corn were as well. The Queso was delicious. My husband ordered the Mexican burger and upgraded from a quarter pound to a half pound. He said it was great, cooked to order (medium) with a great size portion of fries. He said it only needed some heat to it. (so he used our Queso on his burger). I ordered just a boring burger but the bun was grilled and it was cooked perfectly (medium). We had medium hot wings which were flavorful and had heat, which isn't an often thing. We will definitely be returning. Our server was the perfect server, not too intrusive and taking care of us immediately.

I was recommended the Palace Saloon by two different people independently and decided to check it out while staying in the Soo for business. Despite seeing some iffy reviews on Yelp I sauntered in and sat at the bar for a beer and an early dinner. The atmosphere was relaxed and the service was both helpful and capable of interacting with their patrons. I should have asked about their draft beers first instead of instinctively jumping for a Sam Adams as I later found out they had some intriguing local michigan craft beers I would like to have tried. The food was excellent and exactly what I imagined it to be. It wasn't a trendy high fashion Mexican menu and cuisine but the kind of Mexican dishes I enjoy. The queso was delicious and ample, I was able to use some as sauce on my chimichanga which was equally satisfying. This is Mexican as I've come to expect it, tortillas with choice of meat, cheeses, refried beans, rice, sour cream, and some pico de gallo. I am often in Sault St Marie, a few times a year, and will definitely return for another helping in the future.

Not very impressive Mexican food, but for the area there isn't much to choose from. Every little add on has a charge... guacamole, sour cream, extra tortilla shells.. etc. My fajitas came with only 3 tortilla shells so of course I asked for more and they cost about 25 cents each I didn't know that until the bill arrived. Fifty cents isn't that much but do you really have to nickle and dime everything you add to an already pricey entree. The fajitas were ok. The Mexican rice that came with it had cheese and mushrooms in it and was really overcooked. They also came with lettuce, cheese, and tomato which doesn't usually come with fajitas... I would rather have the sour cream and guacamole included instead of that stuff. The queso cheese is the reason to come here! With your choice of corn chips of fried flour chips they make in house. Their margaritas were nice and strong and cheap during happy hour.

Sorry, the Fiesta Quesadilla had one small piece of chicken and no cheese in all three pieces. It was served like a taco in a flour tortilla that was barely grilled. The only good thing was the sweet chili wings.

  • Kendall D.

This was our first time to eat here and we were a little disappointed. The guacamole was basically green sour cream and the salsa was just canned tomatoes! Although the corn tortillas were very stale the white tortillas used in the quesadillias were pretty good!

OK...so I'm from San Diego and am used to authentic Mexican food. This place has a nice atmosphere and the people are nice. I had one of the best steaks here and the prices are really good!

I have been here many, many times - it's in my top 3 favorite SSM restaurants. Most recently I went with a group on Thursday July 11. The Palace is conveniently located right downtown. It has lots of seating but still a cozy vibe. It's super clean. The decor here is really nice and feels kind of upscale now. I would say that this is the best decorated restaurant in SSM, whoever chooses the decor keeps it has a real eye for design - right down to the details, like the candles on the tables (although I miss the old red lights on the walls!) and the bathroom mirrors & fixtures. Good service, even when they're super busy. The food is good. The con queso is simple but delicious. We order it every single time we go! The quesadillas and fajitas are also good, and my friend who had the Seafood Nachos when were there last Thursday night said they were amazing. On my last visit I ordered the 7 Layer Dip and it's the only thing I've really had there that I haven't liked & wouldn't recommend. My friend and I both ordered it and we both thought the exact same thing - there was way too much sour cream and not quite enough beans. But it's a new menu item, so it's possible that they're still tweaking the recipe. ;)

Food was good. Group of 6. All ordered something different. Fajitas, enchiladas, special of the day was pork chop. All very good! Wait staff was on the ball. The place was busy.

First time dining at this restaurant, it was terrible. I had the quesadilla and it had absolutely no flavor. The service was ok, if you like Mexican I would not order it here. Try one of their sandwiches maybe you will have better luck!!

Food ok , if not really a-ok. Convivial atmosphere . Chipper service. Useful on Sunday when some of the better places are closed.

Food=very good. Fajitas, queso, beef enchilada all good. Service=excellent Charging for all extras=tacky. I have never been charged for tortilla chips, jalepenos, and extra tortillas at a mexican restaurant. Sending more than 3 tortillas with a large order of fajitas would be appreciated.

We ordered takeout which we brought over to Soo Brewing. The massive wood carved bar is really impressive, original to this 1903 building. The bartender we ordered from was very friendly, didn't mind that we sat at the bar while waiting. (This easy-going attitude is exactly why we come to the U.P. to vacation) Anyways, the shrimp fajita quesadilla was a great accompaniment to the Soo Brew beer.

Without the help of Yelp! or the extraordinary Twilight Walking Tour, I never would have found the Palace Saloon. The locals certainly know about it and keep the secret mostly to themselves. The Palace is an old building, hearkening back to the days when smugglers ran "ice cream" (aka: booze) across St. Mary River from Canada. I love to think of how many tunnels riddle the old downtown core. Supposedly the saloon hosted its own speakeasy downstairs and has a resident ghost who likes to sit in the back corner booth among the hot pepper Christmas lights, and guess where the beau and I got seated... The next booth over. Mexican standards abound here: burritos, tacos, quesadillas, enchiladas, you name it. The flour chips handed out completely floored me for crispy deliciousness, though the three-flight salsa ranging from hot to scald your eyes off speaks to authenticity and not the bland stuff served from an El Paso jar. This is the real deal. My water glass attested to how much I enjoyed the spicy varieties. The beau ordered beef and pork enchiladas. I went for soft tacos. We were not disappointed; the meat was seasoned and piping, the cheese just starting to ooze into the concoction, and getting nicely stringy. Helpings of the salsa kicked up the excitement factor. Our beans and rice were less exciting but they sure beat bland alternatives, and the rice was quite fragrant. Several of their side dishes and appetizers promised spicier and richer alternatives for discerning palates. I topped off my night with a sunset-hued margarita rimmed in sugar. Holy hell, that thing packs a punch. They don't stint on alcohol here, that's for certain, and you get your money's worth. It's a fun corner to enjoy yourself for the evening and watch the night swirl by in the Soo.

The food was really good...we all had Mexican fare. The Margaritas were tasty but lacked much tequila. There wasn't a lot of ambiance, but the wait staff was very friendly and accommodating. Prices were moderate and the menu selection was big. Gave 4 rather than 5 stars because of limited space with tables blocking the aisle...but maybe that's them trying to accommodate everyone that stops in for a bite. Overall, a nice place to eat.

Cold Michigan beer, spicy chips (we got half tortilla and half flour + guacamole), workmanlike fajitas (we got the special and asked to do half chicken and half steak) - our server Elyse was first class and we had a window seat to boot - it is a little slice of Mexico in The Soo. The mirror behind the bar is adds a touch of class too!

Service was very good. Food was also very good. Portions were very large. We shared an appetizer and had no room for our meals. We will visit again.

Ate here with my daughter. She had a single streak fajita ala cart, and I had the pork burrito. Appetizer of copied and salsa. Total was$27. Food was good and service was friendly. My complaint is that they up charge for everything, rice and/or beans $2, mixed chips .50 ( not like u get more), standard up charges for sour cream etc.

This place has great food and better margaritas! The price is good for the amount of food you get. There are tasty chips with dip upon entry that can fill you up alone.

Absolutely disgusting. I really don't write on here often and am not one to complain about food, but this restaurant just blew me away with its level of gut wrenching cuisine. My wife and I started off with the chili con queso, which was nothing more than Rotel and Velveeta with a side of stale tortilla chips and limp flour chips. I ordered the beef taco and beef enchilada with rice and beans and all I can say is that I can't remember the last time I wanted to spit out my food. Everything was either extremely bland or a soggy mush of flavorless, cheese covered mess. The beans were dry, lumpy and flavorless. The rice had the same consistency as gruel only covered in American cheese. The tortilla used for my enchilada was also stale and tasted like rubber. Not only that, but the meat they used had absolutely no flavor or spice. How hard is it to throw in a packet of Old El Paso (which isn't great, but at least it's something) into your frying pan! As for the taco, well let's just say the taco wasn't any better. It's sad that this is what people up here consider Mexican food. I feel sorry that the people in the UP have never experienced how fantastic Mexican food can be. You guys really don't know what you are missing. We definitely will not be going back to this restaurant.

Half of the offered beer is out all the time. Taco was tasteless and cold. Chicken wings are only half wings and the sauce tasted like vinegar. No recommendation from my side.

For a tex mex restaurant this is very expensive and the quality is sorely lacking. The queso dip they brag about isn't more than some velveeta and a can of rotel, my chips were stale and the rest of our food had the same lack of quality. I used to eat here as a child and enjoyed it, until I grew up and had real text mex and discovered how great it CAN be... This is not it.

You don't expect to find a lot of outstanding food when you visit a smaller town like Sault Ste Marie when it seems a lot of the income is based around summer tourism and winter hockey and snowmobiling. I really didn't expect to find Mexican cuisine up here in the frozen tundra of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. I've eaten there three times during the weeks I've been up here working. Every time I've tried something new and each time it was delicious. I wouldn't call it the best, most authentic Mexican food I've eaten, but I will certainly rate it higher than the chains like On the Border and Border Cantina that we have around Detroit. If you're in town and in the mood for Mexican you won't be disappointed. I'll definitely return to the Palace Saloon when I'm back up here again next winter. Just be sure to get to dinner early because it isn't an enormous restaurant and it fills up quickly.

I've been to The Palace twice now--I only go to the Soo once per year for the I-500 race with friends. My friends went to school in the Soo so they know where ALL the good places are to eat---this was one of them. Yes the Queso is amazing--as well as the mixed chip basket that comes along with it. Heaven. The dip is enough to share with 4 people. Although you may want to order a 2nd round :) I got the wet burrito this time and ate the whole thing- not too large to make you feel uncomfortably full, but just right. Very cheesy. Decently priced margaritas as well- strong enough for just a couple! I really enjoyed the atmosphere here. It's a good time, every time I go to The Palace!

Great service and atmosphere but bland food. Had the chimichanga and tamale with beans and rice. Left much to be desired.

Best queso dip and chips in the state. Get the flour chips if you can, they're heavenly. Moved back downstate - it's something I truly miss. Went on a burrito special night too, wasn't impressed. But the queso and chips? I can't describe how delicious except YUM.

Three words: chili con queso. To die for. I've had better Mexican in more urban areas, but nothing can touch the con queso at the Palace. It is definitely worth any wait you may encounter. I've always had good service and can't complain about anything I've had off the menu. They currently offer a great burrito special on Thursday nights - something ridiculous like 3.95 for a wet burrito. Definitely a must-try restaurant in the area. We have kids and have no problem taking them into the Palace for dinner, even with the full bar. They have a good division between the bar area and the dining area. And they have a great kids menu.

I had pretty high expectations based on the other reviews and it's a cool looking old place, but sadly not all that great. Don't get me wrong it was OK, but nothing very special. The queso that everyone raves about - pretty much rotel dip - the can of rotel and velveeta. The margaritas were pretty decent, but my wife's mojito wasn't very good. The food was typical run of the mill Tex-Mex the kind of thing that you can get at so many chains. They do have a lot of non-Mexican items as well, but we stuck with what they seemed to specialize in....

I made a trip to the Upper Peninsula and Sault Ste. Marie. It was neat to see the locks working. The Palace Saloon is walking distance from the locks and is in an older building. I tried the Mexican Grill. It was a sirloin steak, chicken breast, skewered shrimp and a side. The steak and chicken were cooked just perfect and tasted great. The shrimp was not well prepared. They seem to be cocktail shrimp put on a skewer and served lukewarm and not grilled. Stay away from the shrimp. The atmosphere was fun and the wait staff was very pleasant. I recommend trying The Palace Saloon when in the U.P.

I love this restauarant. Mexican food of all types and well done. Usually a lineup so come early. The bonus is while you wait in line you can get something from the bar (right next to it). The only down side, one toilet per gender. Who puts only one toilet in a mexican restaurant?

Love this place. Best food in the Sault. American and Mexican. Only downfall is no fish or pasta :( but they have great quesadillas and steaks, and you have to try the GRANDE margaritas! Always food and margaritas on special. Very clean, and wonderful wait staff/bartenders. Please make this a must go if your visiting Sault MI.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
